 White-plumed Honeyeater (Lichenostomus penicillatus).
I took a quick walk through Westgate Park during my lunch hour last week, looking for Spiny-cheeked HE and found this co-operative fella. This species has all but disappeared from our neighbourhood, so it was nice to get a reasonable image of one. Midday sun is a little harsh but you take what you can get.
Canon 40D, Canon 100-400mm @ 400mm, 1/640, f/8.0, ISO400, HH. Thanks for viewing.

Nice pic. Light looks fine George - Nothing looks blown. You'd perhaps benefit from a bit of flash to lift those darker underbelly areas. I know its been said before but certainly one of the more challenging 'common' species to get a clear shot of. Did you try the bush/creek bed by the white windmill for spiny cheek HE? Was quite a consistent spot last year
Kind Regards Karl

You've done quite well George. They can be an un-cooperative species. There is some nice detail in the feathers and you've caught a typical HE pose.
EDIT: I just did a quick S/H adjustment trying to open up the area in shadow near the leg.

Great image George which has been lifted by Geoffs repost Do you think this bird was feeding on the sweet secretions that this plant gives off from around the seed pods? Seen New Hollands doing it but not this species

Firstly, thanks to all who commented. Charleybird wrote: Nice pic. .....Did you try the bush/creek bed by the white windmill for spiny cheek HE? Was quite a consistent spot last year G'day Karl, yes I did look around that area and did see one but he was unwilling to come down from the top of a tree. Time was limited so I took the offer from the White-plumed. GeoffG wrote: You've done quite well George. They can be an un-cooperative species. EDIT: I just did a quick S/H adjustment trying to open up the area in shadow near the leg. I was pleasantly surprised by the feather detail that was captured. Thanks for the re-post. It certainly has addressed the deficiencies that Karl mentioned. [EDIT] Sorry Paul, I meant to answer you question, too. Yes, it seemed as though they were feeding on some type of secretion.

Geoff's edit has lifted what was already a great image, George. Harsh light not a worry for me, especially in the repost.

Lovely image BTW HJC Noisy Miners, the bullies of the bush, is my theory. The Little Wattlebirds also give them a hard time but I think it has been the explosion of NM numbers.

I have a few shots of this species, as they are very hard to get in the open with good detail. you have done well, and you got good detail.
